Snow and Strong Winds Hit Mountain Highways

Winter weather has returned to the mountains, and it's bringing snow and strong winds with it. The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Warning for the mountains above 5,000 feet, and a Winter Weather Advisory for the mountains below 5,000 feet.

Snowfall totals could reach 6 to 12 inches in the mountains above 5,000 feet, and 2 to 4 inches in the mountains below 5,000 feet. Wind gusts could reach 50 mph or more, creating blizzard-like conditions.

These conditions could make travel difficult or impossible on mountain highways. The California Department of Transportation has issued a chain control order for all vehicles on Interstate 80 over Donner Summit. Other mountain highways may also be closed or require chains.

If you must travel on mountain highways, please be prepared for winter weather conditions. Make sure your vehicle is equipped with snow tires or chains, and carry a winter survival kit. Be aware of the weather forecast and road conditions before you travel, and allow extra time for your trip.
