New Brunswick Mother Honored as National Silver Cross Mother after Losing Sons to PTSD
A Tragic Journey of Grief and Resilience
Brenda Arsenault, a mother from New Brunswick, has been honored with the prestigious National Silver Cross Mother Award in recognition of her profound sacrifices and resilience in the face of unimaginable loss. Brenda has lost two sons, both of whom served in the Canadian military and struggled with the devastating effects of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).
Brenda's son, Corporal Robbie Arsenault, took his own life in 2013 after battling PTSD for over a decade. Her second son, Master Corporal Jeffrey Arsenault, died by suicide in 2017, also following a prolonged battle with PTSD.

The National Silver Cross Mother Award is presented by the Royal Canadian Legion to mothers who have lost children while serving in the Canadian Forces, as well as civilians who have lost loved ones serving in the Canadian Forces. Brenda's award ceremony was held in Ottawa on May 8, 2023, where she was presented with the Silver Cross pin and a certificate by Legion President Bruce Poulin. Brenda expressed her gratitude for the acknowledgment and acknowledged the importance of the Legion's work in supporting military families.
