Patriots Defensive Coordinator Explains Decision to Kick Extra Point Instead of Two-Point Conversion
Patriots Defensive Coordinator Matt Patricia explained the decision to kick the extra point instead of attempting a two-point conversion in Saturday's preseason game against the Carolina Panthers.
Conservative Approach After Touchdown Drive
Patricia stated that the decision was a conservative one, given the offense's struggles in the game. The Patriots had scored their first touchdown of the preseason late in the first half and wanted to secure the points.
"We felt like at that point in time, being that close to the end of the half, that getting the lead was important," Patricia said.
Defense's Belief in Run Defense
Patricia also mentioned the defense's confidence in their run defense, which had been stout throughout the game. The Panthers had gained just 61 rushing yards on 15 attempts before the extra point attempt.
"We felt very comfortable with our defense and our ability to stop the run there," Patricia said.
Limited Time for Decision
Patricia acknowledged that the decision had to be made quickly as the clock was running down. The Patriots had just scored a touchdown with 1:55 remaining in the half and needed to get back on the field for defense.
"We had to make a quick decision, and that was what we decided to do," Patricia said.
Importance of Winning Football Games
Patricia emphasized the importance of winning football games, particularly in the preseason. The Patriots went into the game with a 2-0 record and wanted to maintain that momentum.
"It's about winning football games, and that's what we're trying to do," Patricia said.
