Denzel Washington and Jake Gyllenhaal Join Broadway's 'Othello' Cast
All-Star Trio Completes Production
Tony Award-winning actors Denzel Washington and Jake Gyllenhaal will star in the Broadway revival of William Shakespeare's tragic masterpiece, "Othello." The two actors will join previously announced Tony Award-winner David Oyelowo, who will play the title role of Othello.
Washington will play Iago, Othello's treacherous ensign, while Gyllenhaal will portray Desdemona, Othello's beloved wife. The production will be directed by Tony Award-winner Sam Gold and is scheduled to begin performances at the Bernard B. Jacobs Theatre on May 19, 2023.
The addition of Washington and Gyllenhaal to the cast rounds out an all-star trio of performers with extensive Broadway and film credits. Washington has won two Academy Awards and three Golden Globe Awards, while Gyllenhaal has been nominated for an Academy Award and a Golden Globe Award. Oyelowo has won a Golden Globe Award and has been nominated for two Academy Awards.
Gold's previous Broadway credits include "Fun Home," "The Glass Menagerie," and "King Lear." He has won two Tony Awards for Best Direction of a Play.
