Russell Brand Faces Historical Sex Offence Investigation

Russell Brand is being investigated by Essex Police for an alleged historical sexual offence. The investigation was launched after the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) reviewed a case that was previously closed.

In a statement, Essex Police said:

"We can confirm that we are investigating an allegation of historical sexual assault made against Russell Brand. The allegation was made to Essex Police in 2014 and was subsequently referred to the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS). The CPS reviewed the case and in 2015 it was decided that there was insufficient evidence to proceed with a prosecution. However, in light of new information that has come to light, the CPS has now asked Essex Police to reinvestigate the matter."

"We have reviewed the case and have decided that there is sufficient evidence to proceed with a prosecution. We have therefore instructed Essex Police to reinvestigate the matter."

Brand has not yet been charged with any offence and is entitled to the presumption of innocence.
