Grading the Spartans: MSU's Disastrous Loss to Indiana

Quarterbacks: F

Payton Thorne had a nightmare performance, completing just 11 of 25 passes for 109 yards with two interceptions. His decision-making was poor, and he was unable to generate any rhythm for the offense. Backup Noah Kim didn't fare much better, going 0-for-3 with an interception.

Running Backs: D

Kenneth Walker III was held to just 94 yards on 22 carries, his lowest output since the season opener. The offensive line struggled to create running lanes, and Walker was unable to find any open space. Elijah Collins and Jordon Simmons combined for just 16 yards on 10 carries.

Wide Receivers: F

The wide receivers were a major disappointment, failing to make a single catch in the first half. Jayden Reed had a few drops, and Keon Coleman was targeted just once. Tre Mosley made a few nice plays in the second half, but it was too little, too late.

Tight Ends: F

The tight ends were non-factors in the passing game, combining for just one catch for 10 yards. Daniel Barker had a few drops, and Connor Heyward was targeted just once.

Offensive Line: F

The offensive line was atrocious, unable to generate any push in the running game or protect the quarterback in the passing game. Thorne was sacked three times and pressured all night long. The line also allowed Indiana to score a touchdown on a fumble return.

Defensive Line: D

The defensive line struggled to generate pressure on Indiana quarterback Michael Penix Jr., who had all day to throw. Penix was sacked just twice and was never really in danger of being taken down. The line also allowed Indiana to rush for 145 yards on 32 carries.

Linebackers: D

The linebackers were unable to stop Indiana's running game or provide any pressure on the quarterback. Kobe Jones had a few tackles, but he was often out of position. Antjuan Simmons and Darius Snow were also ineffective.

Secondary: F

The secondary was torched by Indiana quarterback Michael Penix Jr., who threw for 422 yards and four touchdowns. The defensive backs were unable to cover Indiana's receivers, and they allowed several big plays down the field.

Special Teams: F

The special teams unit was another major disappointment. Matt Coghlin missed a 42-yard field goal, and Bryce Baringer had a punt blocked that was returned for a touchdown. The unit also allowed a kick return for a touchdown.

Coaching: F

Mel Tucker and his staff were outcoached by Indiana head coach Tom Allen. The Spartans were outplayed in all phases of the game, and Tucker was unable to make any adjustments to stop the bleeding.
