Monterrey Rolls Over Atlas 4-0, Stays High In Apertura 2024 Standings
Monterrey Stays on Top
Monterrey extended their unbeaten streak to four games and stayed atop the Liga MX Apertura 2024 standings with a resounding 4-0 victory over Atlas on Saturday night.
First Half Dominance
Monterrey controlled the game from the opening whistle, creating several chances before taking the lead in the 25th minute. Rogelio Funes Mori finished off a cross from Jesús Gallardo to give Rayados a 1-0 lead.
Monterrey doubled their advantage shortly before halftime when Alfonso González scored with a header. The Monterrey defense was solid throughout the first half, preventing Atlas from creating any clear-cut chances.
Second Half Surge
Monterrey continued to dominate in the second half and extended their lead in the 65th minute. Rodrigo Aguirre converted a penalty kick after Atlas goalkeeper Camilo Vargas brought down Funes Mori.
Monterrey put the game out of reach in the 80th minute when substitute Maxi Meza scored a stunning goal from outside the box. Atlas had no answer for Monterrey's attacking prowess and was unable to find a consolation goal.
Impressive Performance
Monterrey's performance was impressive, with each player contributing to the victory. Funes Mori was a constant threat upfront, scoring one goal and setting up another. Gallardo and González were solid defensively, while Aguirre and Meza provided the attacking spark.
Tough Opponents Ahead
Monterrey will face a tough test in their next match when they travel to face Cruz Azul. Cruz Azul has been in excellent form this season and will be looking to avenge their defeat to Monterrey in the Clausura 2023 final.
