GOP Senator Challenges Former President's Election Denial
WASHINGTON - Republican Senator Tim Scott pressed former President Donald Trump's lawyer, Justin Clark, on Wednesday, questioning the false claims that Trump won the 2020 election.
During a Senate hearing on the January 6 Capitol insurrection, Scott asked Clark about a phone call between Trump and Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger, in which Trump pressured Raffensperger to "find" enough votes to overturn the election results.
"Did you ever advise the president that he should not make that phone call?" Scott asked.
Clark responded that he had not advised Trump against making the call.
"Do you believe that the president's phone call to Secretary Raffensperger was appropriate?" Scott continued.
"I believe that the president was expressing his concerns about the election," Clark said.
Scott also questioned Clark about Trump's false claims that the election was stolen from him due to widespread voter fraud.
"Do you believe that the 2020 election was stolen?" Scott asked.
"I believe that there were irregularities in the 2020 election," Clark said.
Scott pressed further, asking Clark if he had any evidence to support the claim that the election was stolen.
"I do not have any evidence to support that claim," Clark said.
Scott's line of questioning was significant because it marked one of the few times that a Republican senator has publicly challenged Trump's false claims about the election. It also came as the House Select Committee investigating the January 6 Capitol insurrection continues to gather evidence about Trump's attempts to overturn the election results.
