Former NHL Star Kevin Bieksa Condemns Xhekaj's Hit On Acciari
"Wouldn't Care If It's Clean Or Not" Statement
Former NHL star Kevin Bieksa has condemned Montreal Canadiens defenseman Arber Xhekaj's hit on Florida Panthers forward Anthony Acciari, calling it "a dirty hit."
Xhekaj delivered a high hit on Acciari in the first period of the Canadiens' 5-2 win over the Panthers on Tuesday night. Acciari left the game and did not return, and is now in concussion protocol.
Bieksa, who played in the NHL for 13 seasons, said on the Sportsnet broadcast that he believes the hit was dirty because Xhekaj targeted Acciari's head.
"He went for the head, he knew what he was doing," Bieksa said. "I don't care if it's clean or not, it's a dirty hit."
Xhekaj was not penalized on the play, but the NHL's Department of Player Safety is expected to review the hit and could suspend him.
Acciari is a key player for the Panthers, and his absence is a big blow to the team. He is a physical forward who is known for his ability to forecheck and create scoring chances.
The Canadiens are off until Thursday, when they will host the Detroit Red Wings. The Panthers are back in action on Wednesday, when they will host the Boston Bruins.
